Romanian violinist, composer and conductor George Enescu was born on this day in 1881.
Remembered as one of the most influential violin pedagogues of the 20th Century, his famed students included: Yehudi Menuhin, Christian Ferras, Ivry Gitlis, Arthur Grumiaux and Ida Haendel.
Enescu composed 3 Symphonies, 3 Orchestral Suites, 2 String Quartets, 3 Violin Sonatas, 2 Cello Sonatas, 2 Piano Sonatas and a sizable body of chamber ensemble works – and was the dedicatee of Eugene Ysaye’s 3rd Solo Violin Sonata.
